Got Back Pain?  It Might Be Your Pelvis.

There are many potential causes of Back Pain, but today I want to highlight something that can often be overlooked…and can also be fixed.

​That is your pelvis!

​If your pelvis is not aligned properly it can lead to Back Pain…and Hip Pain…and Knee Pain…and pelvic floor dysfunction (a.k.a. peeing your pants a little when you cough, sneeze or lift something heavy) and MORE!
An uneven pelvis is more common than you think.  In fact, I would estimate I see this problem in OVER 50% of the patients I see in my clinic with Back Pain.

If one side of your pelvis is higher or is rotated out of position its going to put a lot of strain on the joints, ligaments and discs in your lower back.  It causes some muscles to be tight and painful, or even worse it can cause severe spasms.  Other muscles are overstretched or become weak.  Nerves can become irritated and cause severe pain.  It also alters how you walk and can affect your balance too.

NOT GOOD, RIGHT?

If this is overlooked or not corrected the problems can start to spiral out of control. 

What may have started as Back Pain or Knee Pain eventually turns into BOTH…next you start to have Hip Pain, then you start peeing your pants.  The progression of pain and problems doesn’t happen in the same way for everyone.  I’ve seen cases that started with Knee Pain or Hip Pain. 

The point is…an improperly aligned pelvis is a BIG PROBLEM!

And no, you’re not just “getting old” or “falling apart”.   It’s not bad genes from your parents or grandparents.  It’s unlikely you have any sort of mysterious rare condition causing all your problems. 

IT MIGHT JUST BE YOUR PELVIS!

So, what causes this to happen in the first place?

There are many causes, but here’s a short list of the most common causes I see with my patients who have NEW Back Pain or CHRONIC Back Pain. 
  • Poor posture. 
  • Improper lifting habits.  
  • Weakness in one or more of the core stabilizers. 
  • Any repetitive activity that biases one side of the body, like always stepping in/out of a delivery truck with the same leg. 
  • Tight muscles around the pelvis or lack of mobility in the hips.   
  • Trauma from a car accident or work injury.
  • A small percentage may have a small leg length difference.

Regardless of what caused the pelvis to shift, the good news is proper pelvic alignment can be restored in most cases through a combination of targeted manual techniques, corrective exercises to address tight and/or weak muscles and improving some bad habits.

Yes, this is something that can still be corrected even if it has been a problem for years!
