How many times have you (or someone you know) made a New Year’s Resolution to “lose weight” or “eat less & exercise more” or “improve your health”?
I know I have…many times!
And I’m pretty sure, I’m not alone here!
I know the frustration of trying again and again to lose weight…and keep it off, without feeling like I’m constantly hungry and craving the very foods I’m trying to avoid.
I know what it feels like to not be able to focus because of “brain fog” and lack of energy.
I know what it feels like to dedicate my time and effort to exercising every day with little to show for it.

Even as a physical therapist knowing everything I knew about health, I still couldn’t figure out the secret. Deep down I felt like I was missing something. There simply had to be a better way!
Then about 3 years ago, I experienced a severe reaction to some facial products that resulted in a bright red, swollen face that was covered in blisters. It took 6 months to fully recover from that…thankfully without any permanent scarring!
But why did my skin react so severely and take so long to heal? I didn’t think my health was THAT BAD! I wasn’t taking any medications for any health problems.
This really got me thinking…about my health, and not just in terms of weight loss. I started to consider what might be going on under the surface of my skin. Maybe I wasn’t as healthy as I thought.
Was I allergic to any foods or products? NOPE! The allergy specialist told me I was “healthy and had nothing to worry about.”
Maybe not right now, but could I be facing a more serious health crisis in a year or 5 years? The answer to that terrified me! I knew I had to do something to improve my health and make sure that didn’t happen.
I’ve always had an interest in health and fitness, which is in part why I became a physical therapist…but now I was on a mission!
A mission to heal my skin and whatever underlying inflammation was causing it…I wanted more than to just lose weight, I wanted to learn how to be a healthy human!
I read numerous books, watched documentaries and studied various approaches…and decided to try a plant-based diet. This is something I had stumbled across in my research. I hadn’t tried “that yet” and it seemed to have some merit, so I gave it try. I lost a few pounds, felt an increase in my energy and my skin was healing, but I often felt hungry and had a lot of gut discomfort and bloating! I knew I couldn’t sustain this long term and had to give it up after about 6 weeks.
Back to square one!
Then I came across this concept of ancestral health and a primal lifestyle! No, it’s not the CAVEMAN DIET! It’s simply based on what our needs are as HUMANS and how we are genetically designed to eat, move and live.
With everything I knew, everything I had experimented with and researched…this just made sense!
Could it really be that simple?
I wanted to learn more, which ultimately led to me becoming a Certified Primal Health Coach. As I started to apply the principles I was learning to my own life, I started to notice my skin seemed to be healing faster and was clearer than it had EVER been. The gut discomfort that I had come to believe was normal, was gone…and I lost 10 pounds almost effortlessly in a matter of just a few weeks!
At first, I just wanted this knowledge for myself, but as I started to share this knowledge with family and friends and saw the changes it made in their lives…I knew I had to find a way to share it with others.
So now here we are! We all survived the holidays, but many of us (me included) started the New Year with a few extra pounds and maybe some other minor complaints related to our recent “unhealthy” indulgences.
Now, while this is a perfect time for a New Year’s Resolution, there are so many options and conflicting ideas out there when it comes to nutrition, fitness and health (maybe even more so right now) …leaving us more confused than ever about what to do, or even where to start.
Well, I want to encourage you to simply start at the beginning and learn (or re-learn) the basics of human health!
I am by no means perfect here and like many of you I too enjoyed the holidays, perhaps a little too much. I am on my own journey and have made a commitment to re-focus on my health goals with the New Year upon us.
My hope is to encourage you to challenge yourself to “not just go on another diet”, but to learn more about what you can do differently to truly be healthy.
Since I've made a commitment to myself and a commitment to share my knowledge with you...I’ve also decided to share my journey with YOU!
