I love using tennis balls for self-massage! It's not only easy & inexpensive...it's incredibly effective!
While massage alone generally will not not fix the underlying problem causing a muscle to be tight or painful, it can still be a very important part of the recovery and healing process. Massage can temporarily relieve tight muscles and decrease pain, but it also improves blood flow to the area and helps promote healing.
I incorporate massage into my physical therapy treatments for most of my patients, but I also teach my patients how to use tennis balls for self-massage at home to help them get even more relief between our treatments...
