I see so many people that have been dealing with some kind or ache or pain for weeks, months…and often years!
Many of them have come to believe that “it’s just a normal part of aging” or “something they have to live with”…maybe that is true in some circumstances, but for the most part it’s simply not true.
Most of the time there is a reason for a persistent ache or pain. If we can find the cause, generally there is something that can be done to correct the problem, get rid of the ache or pain and then prevent it from coming back.
So why do so many people, live in pain? I’m pretty sure it’s not because they like it.
Living with persistent or chronic pain can deeply impact a person’s enjoyment of life, relationships, general happiness and overall health.
They’ve tried “everything” and “nothing seems to work”. They simply don’t know what else to do!
Well keep reading, because I’m going to explain why this happens and what you can do about it.
WHY IT HAPPENS…
The story usually goes something like this…
There is an injury or incident that causes the pain to start…OR in a lot of cases the pain just seems to start randomly without any specific trauma.
Unless it’s severe enough to warrant and Emergency Room visit, most people take the “I’ll just wait and see approach”.
With some rest, limiting activities and a little time, things often start to feel a little better…because the human body has this incredible ability to self-heal, at least to a large degree.
This is usually where it starts to go wrong though.
While rest and limiting activities allows some healing to occur, it also contributes to some tightness and weakness from the decrease in activity levels.
If the tension and weakness isn’t properly corrected these muscle imbalances lead to mechanical dysfunction…
and causes pain to persist or even get worse.
Even if the pain goes away initially, it often comes back.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT…
Most people simply need to be guided through the 4 Phases of Care, so they can fully recover and prevent the pain from coming back…again & again.
Phase 1 – Acute Phase: This phase focuses on getting you out of an acute situation – meaning decreasing your pain so you are more comfortable.
Most people work through the Acute Phase of an injury by simply resting and limiting activity…that “I’ll wait and see approach” I mentioned.
Others will see their primary care physician or another health care provider for help. Unfortunately, most of the time this “help” focuses on reducing pain and doesn’t correct the problem that is causing the pain.
More often than not, this is where a lot of treatment stops. Pain is improved, or maybe even gone…at least for now.
Unfortunately, it will be back if the underlying problem isn’t fixed!
You need to go through the remaining 3 phases of care for your best chance of a full recovery!
Phase 2 – Corrective Phase: In this phase we focus on identifying the real underlying cause of the problem and then we work to correct it. We work to get you back to the activities you need and want to do. If you’re not able to do the things you used to do, you’re not REALLY recovered…are you?
Phase 3 – Maintenance Phase: In this phase we focus on helping you learn to maintain the improvements you’ve now made and work to establishing a solid self-care routine…this is how you prevent the pain from returning.
Yes, it will take a little work! We are mechanical beings a we do require some maintenance. Think about what happens if you don’t brush your teeth…cavities, gum disease, root canals, etc.
It’s equally unrealistic to think that your muscles and joints will not malfunction if you don’t do something to keep them healthy.
Okay, so now your maintaining…and this is a great place to be!
You’re feeling better and back doing things you were missing out on before.
Is that it? Or is there more?
I find most people have other health goals and would benefit from a Wellness Program that focuses on helping them reach these goals.
Phase 4 – Wellness Phase: This is where one can focus on increasing fitness levels and overall health through improved nutrition, progressive exercise programs, yoga & meditation.
If you have additional health and fitness goals it always helps to have someone to support you, hold you accountable and cheer you on.
